Five Friday Faves: Ways to clean your makeup brushes

Makeup brushes and sponges are tools that are very essential for me when I do my makeup and I’m pretty sure that all of the makeup lovers out there would agree with me or for some it’s the holy grail of makeup application. Though I admit that I still use my hands when I apply my foundation, concealer, blush and eye shadow.

And I just wanted to highlight the importance of cleaning your makeup brushes/sponges.
How dirty brushes affect your skin
While your bristles pick up pigments, they also collect dirt, oil, and bacteria—and this affects Beauties with sensitive or acne-prone skin the most! “This buildup can be transferred to your skin and cause breakouts,” says Dr. Tanzi. The risk of infection is lower with blush and face powder brushes since they are not coming in contact with wet areas like the eyes and mouth, which can harbor more bacteria and viruses.

Having that said, I honestly don’t clean my makeup brushes once a week. Sometimes it takes a month for me to clean it. What I do is every time after I use it, I dab my brush on a cotton ball with toner on it. And I suggest for you guys not to do what I do.

Before I really don’t know how to clean my makeup brushes, so what I do was I pour makeup remover on each brush and clean the bristles using my fingers on running water. It does the job but it does take a toll on my makeup remover too. Since then I’ve done some research of how to clean your makeup brushes the “home made way” since I really don’t want to spend big on makeup cleaners. (My mindset was: I’m not a makeup pro to spend a lot on those kinda stuff) Soooo, here are my Five Friday Faves that show Ways to clean your makeup brushes.

1. Cleaning makeup brushes using a dishwashing liquid and extra virgin olive oil
The video below is an old school youtube tutorial from Michelle Phan and until now I still do this kind of cleaning with my makeup brushes. Personally I use baby oil instead of
extra virgin olive oil. I recommend this tutorial because the dishwashing liquid disinfects while the oil conditions the brushes.

2. Cleaning makeup brushes using baby shampoo + warm water

Basically the concept from the first video is just the same. But I rarely do this since I don’t have a stock of baby shampoo at home and would not use adult shampoo as an alternative since it has different chemicals on it. I recommend this because the baby shampoo is mild on the hair and warm water removes bacteria. Note:WARM not Hot. Hot water might cause the bristles of the brush to fall out.

3. Cleaning makeup brushes with Beauty Blender Solid Cleanser + MakeUp Washing Brush Egg
I honestly don’t knoe where to buy the Beauty Blender Solid Cleanser besides online but I personally think that you can use baby soap instead. I just purchased a MakeUp Washing Brush Egg but haven’t used it. On this video it’s finally making sense to me now. And for me, among these 5 ways to clean your makeup brushes, this is my most favorite way to clean makeup brushes. I really really recommend this tutorial and having the MakeUp Washing Brush Egg.

4. Cleaning makeup brushes with makeup remover + kitchen towel
Now why kitchen towel instead of a regular tissue? It’s because a kitchen towel does not tear easily. I use this method if I’m too lazy to prep materials and go to the kitchen sink. The video below is as easy as 1-2-3, but I have to admit it’s somehow a waste of makeup remover/cleanser.

5. Cleaning makeup brushes with dishwashing liquid + makeup remover + baby oil and the MakeUp Washing Brush Egg
Last but not least. My own MakeUp brushes/sponge cleansing technique. I don’t have it on video since I’m blogging from the hospital right now (and I am recovering). My technique is like a mash up of the tutorials 1 to 4. As seen on the photo that I created below. These are the tools to be used.

So, on a clean tray or plate (preferrably white) pour the dishwashing liquid (40%), baby oil (40%), and makeup remover (20%). I did include percentages on them just for you to gauge the amount of product to put on the plate or tray. Then, grab all your dirty makeup brushes and sponges and put them aside near the tray/plate then one by one, starting with your brush, swipe the mixture in circular motion, once you have a thick consistency with the makeup residue, grab your makeup washing brush egg and brush it under running tap water. And place your cleaned brush on a neat towel or kitchen towel aside if you prefer. I do recommend to clean all the brushes first and then make another set of mixture for the sponges. The difference of the cleansing technique with the sponges is that you have to squeeze it several times to ensure that all of those makeup residue are out and brush it on the makeup washing brush egg.

And there you go! I hope today’s blog made you realize how important it is and how easy it is to clean your makeup brushes and sponges because it’s for your own skin. I want to know your ideas too by leaving it on the comments section below. Thanks again for reading! 😉

Work week makeup

On Wednesday’s we wear pink

As popularized by The mean girls. My look for this blog is inspired with pink shades.

image
For my mascara I use my favorite Maybelline Hypercurl Volum Express and on my lips and cheeks (yeah I doubled the duty) I used my Maybelline Matte Lipstick in Ravishing Rose. I played up 3 colors on my eye shadow palette that has shades of pink (or old rose rather).

image

This was actually my makeup look yesterday and for today here’s my makeup look.

image
For today’s look I just kept my eye brows filled and clean by brushing it with a brown mascara (the running-out-and-dried-up one. I love the neatly brushed effect on my eye brows). On my eye shadow I played up with only 2 shades of nude with shimmer on it and lined my upper eye lid very close to the lash line with liquid eyeliner. And as usual I used my trustworthy and favorite Maybelline Hypercurl Volum Express mascara for my eye lashes. LA Colors in Labial to give my face a bolder look.

And there you have it! At least 2 of my makeup looks that I tried during the work week. I want you guys to also share your makeup look that you do for work or any makeup look that you wanted to share. Let’s collaborate and stay connected! Thanks again so much for reading! 😉

Tuesday Top 3: Makeup Removers

How do I remove my makeup?

On today’s blog I would like to share with you guys my top 3 makeup removers that I’ve tried and tested.

These are the makeup removers that you can easily find in your local drug stores and I swear by it definitely removes dirt and makeup.

image

1. L’oreal Cleansing Milk

This makeup remover right here earned it’s number one spot on my top 3 makeup removers because it totally removes all traces of makeup on my face. It has a milky texture and smells really fresh and doesn’t sting (it’s a huge factor for me). I apply it on a cotton pad (or a stretched out cotton ball) then swipe and massage it allover my face. I also put a very small amount on my fingers for removing traces of mascara and eyeliner and continue swiping it with cotton. I sometimes use it as a moisturizer after washing my face.
From what I recall, I bought this one around 300 to 400 pesos i think. It’s kinda pricy but worth it.

2. Avenè Micellar Lotion

This is my next fave makeup remover that I got from the Cosmo Beauty Block event. And until now I still can’t find where to buy one!

Anyway, i love this product because it’s very gentle on my skin. And again it doesn’t sting. I just apply it on a cotton pad and swipe away those dirt and makeup. I have to admit that the downside of this makeup remover is it doesn’t totally remove my mascara. Especially the water-proof and smudge-proof ones. So I still use baby oil on my lashes and swipe it away with my cotton pad with Avenè.
I love it coz it doesn’t sting at all even if it gets into my eyes. This is a must-buy for me. If somebody knows where I can buy it. Please hit me up on the comment section or on my social media accounts.

3. Nivea Refreshing Cleansing Wipes

As usual I’m into makeup removers that doesn’t sting and feels gentle on the skin. This one doesn’t feel like an ordinary baby wipes (some baby wipes have a slight roughness-feel). The Nivea Cleansing wipes feels like a wet cotton cloth though I’m not sure if it’s comparable to a muslin sheet (kindly google that one for description.

Anyway, this one is good to use if you’re always on the go and lazy to prep in removing your makeup. This only cost me less than 200 pesos.
TIP: I tear one Nivea cleansing wipe into two (or sometimes even three!) to conserve the cleansing wipes. 😉

I have to admit that it’s not practical spending a good amount of money just for removing your makeup. But of course I wanted something cheap, does the job, and still cares for my skin. So, BEHOLD!!!

image
Been using the Belo Essentials Pore refining toner ever since it came out from the market (it’s actually one of the leading skin care brands here in the Philippines). I put a good amount of this toner onto a cotton pad and with 2 drops of Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Oil then swipe off all of my makeup. It doesn’t sting even if I swipe it around my eyes (reiterating: that’s around my eyes, not inside my eyes). My skin doesn’t feel dry after using this and I strongly suggest that you should try it too. Ü

I hope you have learned on this blog today and if you have something to share, please do so, I would love to hear from you guys. Thank you again for reading! 😉

Five Friday Faves: Random Beauty products

Hi guys! It’s already Saturday here where I live but it’s still Friday somewhere else in the world and on today’s blog I want to share my favorite stuff from skin care, to makeup to perfume.

1.  365 Daily Mask from Beauty Buffet (by Watson’s)

image
A mask is a must! Koreans swear by it and even Sandara Park of the band 2NE1 said that she’s using a face mask daily! Yep daily!

What I love about this face mask is its attached to a plastic-like thing to prevent it from tearing since the mask is like a thinner version of your regular mask or baby wipes rather and it doesn’t have a strong smell.

I tried using it for 5 straight days and I noticed how smooth and supple my skin is and it really looks hydrated. And also it appears to me that it’s a lot easier for me to put my moisturizer and makeup coz it glides well and blends well on my face. And it’s only 59 pesos!

TIP: I put on my moisturizer first then leave the mask while I sleep and remove it when I wake up in the morning. (Sometimes I wakeup without it anymore coz I tend to move a lot when I sleep).

2. Avenè Micellar Lotion

This ones is not actually a lotion. It’s a makeup remover. I just got the chance to try this one because I got it for free from Cosmopolitan’s Beauty Block event. And I actually love it!

It smells so mild and it totally removes all the trace of makeup from my face. Well except for water and smudge proof mascara. It doesn’t leave your face dry nor, oily nor greasy. I highly recommend it!

However, I don’t know where to buy this holy grail of makeup remover. Perhaps I can email cosmopolitan about it.

3. LA Girl Nude Eye Shadow Palette

image

I know! I’m self confessed that I’m over reiterating this eye shadow palette on my blog!  I love all of its shades and I’m trying my best not to use it on a daily basis.

It’s actually my childhood best friend who recommended me the brand LA girl. The thing is, she’s actually recommending me the concealer. But when I’m at the LA Girl section at a department store, the nude palette got my attention and I bought it! (Yeah I totally forgot about the concealer)

4. Nyx Soft Matte Cream lipstick in Prague

This nyx lippie is love! I know that on one of my blogs I’ve mentioned that the Revlon Matte Balm is my go-to lippie. However, the Nyx Soft Matte Lip Cream is my next favorite.

I like the mild vanilla scent and how creamy it is when I swipe it on my lips. It’s one of the US-branded liquid/cream lipsticks that I find affordable.

TIP: After applying this lippie, I pat it with my finger and swipe another layer and pat it with my finger that I dabbed onto a baby powder or face powder. Whichever is available. This is how I make this lippie last. ü

5. Revlon Love Is On perfume

image

This new scent of Revlon is basically Love. I don’t know how to explain the scent besides that for me it smells sexy with class. So I did a little research on what is the base of this perfume.

I found out that it’s actually plum blossom with ginger, cardamom and sandalwood, and musk, vanilla and amber. I just love anything vanilla maybe that’s why I really like this scent.

I only have a tester bottle of this one at home but once it’s out in the market. I’ll definitely buy one. I discovered that a percentage of its proceeds will go to breast cancer victims. So think of it that if you bought Revlon Love Is On perfume, you’ve done a charitable work and smell sexy too. 😉

That’s all for today guys. Feel free to interact with me on my social media network found on the stay connected section on this blog and you can also leave your comments. 😘

App of the week: MakeUp Plus

First thing’s first. Thanks to Makeup Plus ph for posting this on Instagram.

"Dare to be fabulous" #MakeupPlusLFW #MakeupPlus

A post shared by MakeupPlus Philippines (@makeupplus_ph) on

Can’t seem to get enough of using the app as you can see below. I’ve edited another photo ü (that’s me killin it)

imageBesides that it has its pre-made look (as seen below)image

You can actually fully customize your look. From foundation, to lipsticks with more than 10 shades with different kinds to choose from like satin, matte or glossy (I personally love matte ü). There’s several blush shades to choose from and many styles on where you want the blush located on your face.

image

And ladies! You can also choose different types of contour (plus strobing. You read that right). Don’t forget your eye brows too! It has several selections of shapes and 3 colors for your eye brows: black, dark brown and light brown. And also a palette of eye shadows too choose from (amazing!ü)

image

This Makeup Plus app will totally give a you a brand new look that actually highlights all your facial features. The app also allows you to change your eye color (I usually use Hazel, Honey, and Grey. I really think it brightens my eyes and compliments with my skin tone). The app also has varieties of eye lashes too choose from!ü My choice of eye lashes are always the ones that has a lower lash lines coz I’m always into brightening up my eyes. This feature I’m not actually expecting which is the eye lid option. Yep! The app is concerned with all kinds of eye lids especially the ones with no eye lids (great job!). I still use this feature even if I have slightly meaty eye lids. It enhances it and I love it!

image

And lastly they have decorations for the face if you still think you need to add some stuff on the face. I like how the maker of this app thought of putting the freckles on it. But I personally love the boho thingy there. Ü

Girls! This is just very easy to use. Once you upload your photo, the makeup plus app will automatically select the focal points on your face and then tap and swipe away. You can experiment with whatever look that you prefer. You can even get makeup inspirations from the looks that you’ve tried on the app and apply it to yourself!ü

I hope you guys are excited as I am experimenting your looks on this Makeup Plus app! Thanks so much for reading!😘

What’s up Wednesday

Today’s featured look

I used 2 shades from my new fave LA Girl nude eye shadow palette, a very thin winged eyeliner, for my brows I used brown eye liner and brushed it with an almost-running-out brown mascara and I swear it really does the trick for nicely brushed brows compare if you’re going to use a regular mascara it’ll leave your eye brows clumpy and bushy-wet-looking (you don’t want that). And for my lashes, as always; Maybelline the Hyper Curl Volum’ express mascara (my favorite one next to Magnum). For my face powder I used NYX stay matte but not flat powder foundation in Nude Diaphane.

I really want to show you guys how I do my make up especially the eye makeup. It’s where I really take so much time. BUT my phone memory is really preventing me from doing that. I really like doing everything (almost) on my phone. I’m using an iPhone 6, a wordpress app for blogging and the iMovie app for video editing. It’s really convenient. HOWEVER, it’s storage is really terrible and the quality of the video is just slightly above average. So the blogging/vlogging materials are currently in the works. For the meanwhile I’ll do a lot of blogging rather than vlogging. Don’t forget to check the Stay connected section on the side bar. Thanks guys for reading! 😉

Semi “Glam” makeup for work

Hi guys! Today I decided to play up with my LA Girl Nude Eye shadow palette. But decided to go low-key on the eye liner. Here’s the look that I have for today before going to work.

I used 3 shades for this look which looks like it has a touch of rose gold I guess. Below is a photo of my LA Girl Nude Eye shadow palette. And I really loooove it! Coz it’s not that expensive and its really pigmented. I’m giving it a pigmentation rate of 8/10. Yeah! (Kindly disregard the brown lippie, I dint use that for the make up look ü)

And here’s a closer look of my eye makeup (Yeah I really need to work on my lashes. It’s long but sparsed you know)

Leave your comments below or if you wanted me to do a tutorial for the whole look. Don’t forget to check the “Stay connected” section found on the side bar of this blog to keep in touch. 💋
