The Common Millenial: How Not To Be One

Millenial is also known as Gen Y. Those who are born from the year between 1982 and 2004. Nope! It is not what you usually hear that millenial peeps are born on the 90s only.

As for me I consider myself on the Xennial category. Or perhaps something between the Gen X and Gen Y group. Majority of the media has defined Millennials as lazy, narcissistic and entitled selfie-lovers.I don’t have anything against millenials coz most of my friends are millenials and I have to admit, that yes some of them have a very common trait. But that doesn’t mean they’re a total disadvantage to the society. In fact, Millennials are on track to become the most educated generation in Western history as per research.

Common Millenial = Tech Savvy. Yep its true. Millenials have clearly embraced the technology. But no matter how many advantages millenials do have, There’s really no way a millenial still can’t be labeled a lot. If you’re a millenial and want to stand out from the rest, I’ve Twenty listed things below for you not to be a common millenial.

1. Be Nice.

It’s not something innate but a skill. This trait is overlooked but can get you beyond anything else.

2. Give yourself a break from technology

A lot millenials nowadays are so tech-savvy. Everything that they think they need should be just a grasp away. Like social media.

3. Your accomplishments in life doesn’t always define you

Learn to accept your mistakes and live to learn.

4. Your Instagram post doesn’t translate into your real life

There are a lot of inspirations you can see on instagram or Pinterest but the real inspiration is out there. Not on your phone.

5. Live within your means

You are not like your born-rich millenial friends. If you’re the type who has to earn for a living, then do so and don’t spend too much on yourself just to impress people.

6. Stop worrying that you don’t have a model body

Your dress size is not an accomplishment. But it’s good to stay healthy. If you feel the need to diet and workout, then do so. But do it because you want to get fit and healthy, not because you’re trying to be acceptable to society.

7. Break the millenial habit of documenting your every move

Your life is not a documentary and you are not a reality TV star. This is not something that you do for a living. So stop.

8. Read a books and some legit news

Instead of searching everything online. Why not settle for a good book. Read it every once in a while. You’ll feel a sense of accomplishment after reading one. Also, try watching news on the TV from legit  resources instead of online gossip and breaking news from unreliable resources.

9.Try not to talk about other people’s business

I wanted to share my favorite quote from Eleanor Roosevelt: “Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people.” So don’t be a millenial with a small mind. 🙂

10. Learn to dedicate yourself when you committed to something

Don’t be a lip service. If you committed things to be done, then you must do it. This way, people you commit to will learn to trust you.

11. Have some quiet time and ask yourself: “Am I the person who I wish to be? How else can I improve?”

Thoughts like this will have you thinking how can you be a better person without even consulting anyone.

12. Don’t be a millenial who thinks that joy can be attained with the number of times you traveled to different places

There are some articles that I’ve read that travel is for the soul, you have to collect experiences, and etc. Referring to no. 5, live within your means. If its too expensive for you to travel, don’t push yourself.

13. Keep a small circle of trusted friends and value your friendship

Remember, friends are the family that you can choose 🙂

14. Step out from your comfort zone

You’ll be more quipped to analyze things in life, widen your understanding, increase your productivity. Also, spot-on decisions will be natural for you.

15. Don’t leave your current job just because there are a lot of issues

First figure out things. Perhaps you are the issue or maybe not. Assess carefully first and think how your life will be without a job.

16. Have courage

When something is wrong or not working. Have the courage to speak up.

17. Don’t be in a relationship that stops you from growing

If you’re holding on to a relationship just because you’ve had it for so many years, but it won’t grow after several challenges. Maybe its time for you to think things through. In the next 2 to 5 years, who or what would both of you become? Don’t be afraid to let go and be firm with your actions.

18. Always have time for your family

You may be stuck on a busy work schedule and have plans with you friends. But don’t forget to dedicate some time with your family. If everything else goes wrong. Your family will always have your back.

19. Be your own role model

There’s nothing wrong admiring other people and having them as your own role model. But not to the extent that you are pressure changing yourself to become “that” person. Also try to reflect if the attitude or behavior that you project is something that you want to be known by the people around your or rather, if you’ll have a child of your own someday, can you be a role model for them? 🙂

20. Focus on the people who matters and disregard those who don’t

As per Dr. Seuss, “Be who you are and say what you feel. Because those who mind don’t matter. and those who matter don’t mind.”
